John is a seasoned strategist with extensive experience in media relations, public affairs, crisis and litigation communications for a wide range of clients across sectors.
John Gallagher is a leading public affairs strategist with expertise in strategic media relations, crisis management, and litigation communications. He serves a broad portfolio of clients across sectors, including technology, law, finance, real estate, and construction.
Gallagher joined Mercury in 2012 as Managing Director and became a Partner in 2017. In 2022, he was named President of the firm. His leadership reflects decades of experience at the intersection of public and private sector communications.
Before Mercury, Gallagher was Senior Vice President of Public Affairs at Tishman Construction Company and Tishman Realty LP, providing counsel during Tishman’s acquisition by AECOM.
Gallagher previously served as Press Secretary and Spokesman for New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, and as Vice President of Public Affairs for the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, where he oversaw communications related to the rebuilding efforts following the September 11 attacks. Earlier in his career, he held communications roles in the New York State Senate and managed messaging and media relations for several statewide political campaigns.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Master of Arts in Communications from the State University of New York at Albany.
Gallagher currently serves on the boards of the New York League of Conservation Voters, the Hunter Foundation, and the Downtown Lower Manhattan Association. He previously served on the board of the Empire State Pride Agenda and the Education Alliance.
