Karen joined Mercury after a 25-year career as a reporter, editor and manager at The Associated Press. For seven years she served as the head of The AP’s operations for the Eastern U.S., overseeing the news report, hiring and staff development in 10 states and a regional publishing center based in Philadelphia.

Karen twice served as The AP’s news editor in Boston, where she led the coverage of the aftermath of jets being hijacked from Boston’s Logan Airport and flown into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001; the first state to legalize gay marriage; and the Red Sox ending their World Series drought after 86 years.

Karen has also worked as a reporter and newsroom manager in Albany, Miami, Springfield, West Palm Beach and Boston.

Karen began her journalism career at The Post-Standard of Syracuse, NY and served several years as an adjunct professor of journalism at Boston University. She is a native of Georgetown, MA and a graduate of Syracuse University.
