New York, NY June 16, 2011 — Mercury today announced Hon. Fernando Ferrer was unanimously confirmed to the Board of the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) by the New York State Senate on Wednesday.
“Throughout my career in both the public and private sectors I have been dedicated to improving the quality of life for New Yorkers and advancing merited causes,” said Fernando Ferrer, Co-Chairman of Mercury and MTA Board member. “My new leadership role with the MTA will allow me to continue that mission. I’m honored that the Governor and the Senate have selected me, and I look forward to working with my fellow Board members.”
Earlier this year, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo selected Ferrer to replace Doreen Frasca, whose term expired in 2010. As an MTA Board member, Ferrer will oversee: New York City Transit, Long Island Rail Road, Long Island Bus, Metro-North Railroad, Bridges and Tunnels, MTA Bus, and Capital Construction.
“Fernando’s appointment is a great day for Mercury and we are all very proud to call him our colleague and partner,” said Kirill Goncharenko, President and Managing Partner of Mercury. “Being recognized by the governor to hold this position and lead an organization which impacts the lives of millions of New Yorkers, tourists and commuters every day is a true testament to his character and ability to lead.”
Ferrer works from Mercury’s New York City office where he specializes in healthcare, education, political and urban affairs. After a successful tenure in the New York City Council, he was elected as the Bronx Borough President where he held office for 14 years. In that role, Ferrer designed and oversaw the largest urban rebuilding effort in the country and is now nationally recognized as an architect for revitalizing American cities. Renowned as one of the top Hispanic leaders in America, Ferrer remains a prominent Hispanic voice in the five boroughs of New York City and beyond.
