Mercury Welcomes Former California Senate Communications Director Anthony Reyes

Obama Treasury Appointee Joins the firm’s California Operation

Sacramento, CA – Mercury, a leading global, bipartisan public strategy firm, announced the addition of Anthony Reyes as a Senior Vice President. Reyes, who recently worked at Edelman and previously served as Communications Director for former California Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de Leon, will be based in the firm’s Los Angeles office, focusing on strategic communications.

“We are excited to welcome Anthony Reyes to our growing California team,” said Fabian Núñez, Mercury Partner and former Speaker of the California State Assembly. “Anthony brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in and around the State Capitol as well as serving clients from all spectrums of California’s economy. His expertise around public affairs and public relations will be a great asset for our clients.”

During the leadership tenure of California Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León in the California Senate from 2014 to 2018, Reyes served as communications director and top advisor leading efforts on media response, digital strategy and organized campaigns to pass historic pieces of legislation related to the environment, clean energy, immigration reform, gun control, labor, and more. Reyes played an instrumental role in the passage of California’s 50-percent and 100-percent renewable energy standards and worked closely with the California Assembly and Governor Jerry Brown’s office helping enact state budgets, as well as sweeping packages of bills on housing and transportation infrastructure.

Last year, Reyes worked as a Vice President for Corporate and Public Affairs at Edelman in Sacramento where he helped private and public-sector clients on issues related to water, technology, and transportation, before launching an independent practice to focus on the 2018 midterm elections.

Before moving to California, Reyes served as a President Obama appointee in the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Public Affairs under Secretaries Tim Geithner and Jack Lew. Reyes started his career producing national television news in New York where he covered national politics and breaking news at MSNBC and NBC News. In 2010, he launched MSNBC’s The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell and went on to cover the 2012 Presidential election.
